I first visited China in 1997 as our airplane made a steep descent into the old Hong Kong airport. Since the age of 8 I had always had a fascination with China due to my study of martial arts and Bruce Lee's fighting method. So Hong Kong held a special place for me in my heart, the place where one of my heroes was from.

Starting my new venture capital fund: firstup ventures - Steve Harmon - 史蒂夫·哈蒙独家中文博客

In those days few people were on the Internet in China -- less than 5 million. In the U.S. the wave had started but even so, the Internet wasn't mainstream... but I knew it would be. My belief back then was that the Internet would become a utility, something we all used, similar to electricity. Few agreed with me.

In 1995 and 1996 I predicted the rise of the Internet as global phenomenon, and said that new companies such as Amazon and Yahoo would change the world. I strongly recommended their stocks as they went public (and many more).

Soon after I launched my own venture capital fund and made a handful of investments, including one in a startup that created semantic advertising matching. It was called Ad Sense. I led the Series B investment in 1999 and 4 years later Google acquired the company (before Google went public). Today, Ad Sense generates more than $10 billion in annual revenue for Google.

During that time I also wrote a bestselling book on how to build digital ventures. The forewords were written by prominent venture capitalists including John Doerr (investor in Google and Amazon) and Ann Winblad, a leading investor in enterprise software.

In 2001 I recommended to investors to invest in the new Chinese Internet stocks: Sohu, Netease, Sina an more. Those were the days nobody wanted to own an Internet stock, especially outside the U.S.

Wanting to dive into building companies I worked with some of the founders of eBay and built a large ecommerce market that we eventually sold, and then have advised dozens of startups, 3 of which have been acquired (2 by Google). I also have advised university students in building new ventures, some of them have won national competitions vs. other students and gone on to found successful businesses.

And here in China I partnered with Netease and developed an online course for entrepreneurs, helping bring knowledge to the next set of Jack Ma.

Which brings me to today: now that the Internet is truly a utility I see the expansion to mobile, Internet of Things and services in opportunities that I believe will make what's happened so far seem small.

It is with this vision in mind that I am now forming my new venture capital fund, firstup ventures http://firstup.vc to make seed and early stage investments. The fund goal is $10 million with investments of about $100,000 in each startup we invest in.

The approach of firstup is unique: we get in the university, college and companies and help entrepreneurs build the best foundation for success. We work with them, not just write checks. And, unlike most venture capitalists who stick to Silicon Valley we are unique, taking advantage of my experience helping entrepreneurs worldwide, from Shanghai to Sydney to San Francisco.

My love of China still exists. With my new fund I want to invest in promising Chinese startups and help them craft a global strategy. While it will take work, there's opportunities for Chinese ventures to finally break into the U.S. and global market with their mobile and Internet of Things services.

So this is what I am doing. If you would like to be considered to partner with firstup ventures please send me an email to china@firstup.vc

best!
